Storing things for a long period of time can be stressful. You might have valuable things that are very important to you that you are worried about storing. Luckily, storing most items in a storage unit is safe and not anything that should cause concern, so long as you know how to properly care for the items and prep them for storing. Here are a couple tips for storing certain items.
1. Wood Furniture
Wood furniture can be safely stored in a storage unit so long as you follow a couple rules. The first is that you need to have a climate-controlled unit. Many self-storage units will have the option to get climate control. This is a must and is especially important for your wood furniture. The wood will be very susceptible to the changes in temperature and especially the changes in humidity. Thus, even though it will cost you a little more money for rental fees, it will save your furniture.
Second, you should properly prep the furniture by polishing the wood before you store it. By polishing the wood, you keep a nice layer over the top that will protect the wood from absorbing the moisture in the air. Since wood is porous, it is very sensitive to moisture. After you polish the wood, make sure that you drape cloth over the wood, such as a sheet.
2. Leather Furniture
Leather furniture is very similar to the wood. Although the leather isn't porous, it will crack and break if you don't properly store it. When you store the furniture, if possible, you should keep it off the ground. The ground is very sensitive to temperature change, even in a climate-controlled unit. Thus, you should prop up all furniture on something like blocks, or place it on top of other boxes.
Once again, like the wood, you should make sure that polish the leather before you put it on. Not the same polish for the wood, but leather polish, and then drape it lightly with a sheet or piece of fabric.
3. Pictures
Old pictures are incredibly sensitive, and since most of them are priceless, it is vital that they are properly stored. You should never place a picture out in the open. It should be in some sort of box, and within that box a sheet protector of some sort. Make sure that the pictures are away from any direct sunlight, and do not store them next to any liquids.
