A good pallet will elevate your belongings so that they will not come into contact with anything on the ground. If your storage facility is located outdoors, there's no guarantee that a bit of snow might not be able to get under the door when it starts melting. You could also run into trouble if another tenant next door has something go wrong inside their unit and something leaks through to the floor on your side of the building. Again, most self-storage units won't have this problem because they are well-maintained by the owner, but it's always better to err on the side of caution.
Wrap It Up
Wrap everything you put into storage in plastic wrap, or use garbage bags if you don't have anything else. Even if the room is temperature controlled, your belongings could still pick up dust over time. They could also pick up a few bugs if the storage unit is located outdoors. Protect your belongings so that they are in the same condition when you take them out as when you put them in.
Use A Lock With A Short Arm
Self-storage units usually have their own security, but it can't hurt to put an extra lock or two on the door. Go for a lock that is weather-resistant and has a small arm. This will ensure that a thief with a bolt-cutter won't be able to do any damage to your lock and will move on to an easier target.
When putting your items into self-storage, it's a good idea to opt for the insurance package from the storage company. At the same time, take steps on your own to provide extra protection for your belongings. Use pallets to get your items off the ground, wrap each item in plastic wrap before storing, and install your own lock with a short arm that will be hard for a bolt-cutter to get through.
